Hi,
My name is Tom Papandrea. You may not remember me but I was Roy’s assistant at FDO’s, 9th Ave QA lab. I left FDO in Jan 1987 and have been at Polarome smce. Rich Spanier asked me to drop you a line regarding a system for measuring SG, RI and OR. About three years ago, at my request, Anton PAAR, Rudolph Research and Polarometer worked together in order to assemble a system to perform these physical properties for a relatively low price. Using AntonP AAR’s DMA 4500 and SP-3 sample changer in conjunction with Rudolph’s AutoPol IV Polarimeter (using a 25mm cell) and Model J-257 Refractometer we were very successful. Since December of 1999 we have taken well over 20000 measurements. The system has worked very well.
Anton P AAR’s equipment is well known in our industry. Nearly everybody is familiar with it. We used it at Fritzsche and I assume you still do! There isn’t a lot to say here.
Rudolph Research was a very pleasant surprise. The Auotpol IV has performed flawlessly requiring only routine maintenance, only recently. The instrument had been in continuous service since Sept. 1999. When it needed attention it was taken care of quickly and professionally. We rarely have samples that are too dark to read and the accuracy of measurement is far better than we could achieve with an analog Polarimeter.
The J-257 was designed and constructed at my request in order to provide the extended range of RI measurements common to our industry. We received the first production model in December 1999. Understandably we had some problems. On the two occasions where service was required it was performed quickly and professionally; Since the initial kinks were worked out it too has performed very well. I hope you find this information useful.
