Rudolph’s J27D Benchtop Refractometer

The J27D Automatic Refractometer is engineered specifically for quality control laboratories where ease of use and long-term repeatability are the highest priorities.

  • Full Brix Range Capability: The J27D operates across the complete Brix range, allowing a food or beverage production facility to utilize a single instrument for lower-Brix finished products as well as high-Brix syrups and purees. Its  Brix accuracy is ideally suited for most standard QC applications.
  • Wide Refractive Index Range: Operating over a 1.32 to 1.70 refractive index spectrum, the J27D is versatile enough to handle quality control across most chemical manufacturing environments—including those utilizing high-RI solvents like toluene. The  refractive index accuracy is designed to meet the rigorous compliance standards of ASTM and ISO.
  • Specialty Scales Available: For production environments that rely on industry-specific metrics, specialized configurations featuring Butyro, Baumé, and numerous other custom scales are readily available.

Fully Automatic Measuring System

The Rudolph J27 refractometer features a completely automated optical measurement system. The operator simply places the sample on the prism and presses a button; the digital results are immediately displayed on the screen. Because the system is fully automated, there are no manual shadowlines to align and no eyepieces to adjust, completely eliminating operator subjectivity and manual adjustment errors.

True Electronic Temperature Control

Refractive Index is a highly temperature-sensitive property. Temperature is so critical to this measurement that and standard referencing refractive index will also reference the temperature the reading is measured at. For example:

Water n20 = 1.3330

Water n25 = 1.3325

For Brix measurements, some entry-level instruments attempt to bypass temperature management by using mathematical temperature correction. However, this mathematical workaround only functions reliably if the sample matrix is pure sucrose and the ambient room temperature remains perfectly stable (such as in an air-conditioned laboratory). For all other processing realities—such as analyzing alternative sugar profiles or handling large temperature swings (e.g., hot samples pulled straight from a cooking vessel)—a temperature-controlled instrument remains vastly superior.

The one piece of technology nearly everyone is proficient with is a smartphone. By utilizing the familiar Android operating system, the J27D ensures an intuitive user interface, a minimal learning curve, and rapid operator onboarding

Secure Data Export and Storage

No matter how accurately an instrument measures a sample, a single manual transcription typo can render the data meaningless. To safeguard data integrity, the J27D features robust connectivity, allowing users to transfer data directly to a local network or print directly to standard office and industrial printers and avoid handwriting with a pen.

Optional Battery-Powered Upgrade

The J27D can be easily upgraded to support battery operation. If an additional production line opens or a temporary satellite sampling station is established, there is no need to purchase an entirely separate instrument. Simply equip the unit with the optional battery kit to seamlessly move the refractometer back and forth between stations.

The Modern Abbe Refractometer Replacement

For more than a century, the manual Abbe refractometer served as the baseline quality control tool in manufacturing and remains a common teaching instrument in academic laboratories. The J27D is the perfect 21st-century choice to replace aging Abbe hardware, offering:

  • Identical Spectrum: Covers the same range as a traditional Abbe.
  • High-Tier Precision: Accuracy the same as the best abbe instruments but with digital consistency.
  • Built-in Temperature Control: Eliminates the need for bulky, high-maintenance external water bath accessories.
  • Objective Digital Results: Removes subjective manual shadowline alignment and operator eye strain.
  • Enhanced Durability: Features a long-lasting, scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire prism instead of the standard glass found on older Abbe models.
  • Seamless Connectivity: Supports digital data transfer and laboratory software integration.
